Rheostat for instrument lighting control can be measured across 58a and 58b.

The intermittent issue is typically oxidation between the sliding variable contact and the resistive wire, so can probably not be resolved by "rebuilding"...I'd try filling the control with ACZP to both lube and put an anti-corrosive coating on the slider to wire contact.
