Yes, this is possible!
I have had to do this about 3 or 4 times, when changing the starter or replacing the automatic transmission dipstick tube.
I remember using a long flathead screwdriver to tap the bolt into the firewall, then, it would have just enough room to wiggle out.
I think I also used a crowbar to bend the firewall in just a little bit, to create more room.
Good luck, this is one the little frustrating 240 issues that must be overcome, but it can be done.
