ANOTHER '92 Speddometer question

I have the "classic" speedometer problem. Speedo, cruise control and ODO work sometimes. Usually don't work when cold and damp, starts by not working at higher speeds.
I am still not sure if it is the speedo or the sending unit.
1) Will the speedo failing cause the engine to run erratic?
2) Does the engine computer get its speed info from the sending unit directly or from the speedometer? And will a faulty SPEEDO cause the engine symtoms?
3) I know '92 cars have speedo problems, can I get a speedo from a newer car (93...94) that will not have the problem? What fits?
Car info:
1992 740 non turbo Wagon, 155K miles
