Originally I did not have the pipe support the brake drum. I did not realise that the brake drum could not handle the pressure.
After that lesson learned, I made up the pipe suppot and tried it with a hammer. Thinking that the vibration would help but it did not. It just jammed the nut on the stud as I pounded. That is why I'm thinking of using heat.
You are rigth. The hub needs to expand while the stud stays its original size.
It also appears that when the studs were installed they used some brownish compound around the spline. Probably some type of epoxy. I can tell this from stuff that oozzed out around the stud flate head.
I may try your grandfather's method tonight. Insulating the stud with a hose before heating is a good idea.
