Oh, I see. One of the things on my yard list was to look over a '93's shift lock to see what they did to improve the poorly executed 91/92 version. I've seen the exploded view, and one I did get to see in the yard had already been cannibalized. I had the idea the solenoid was external to the shifter cavity, with a cable from it to the shifter, but your description is entirely different, and frankly makes more sense now that you mention a link to the ignition lock.
Here's the exploded view of yours, Ken, where I understand now the destination of the cable (item 41) must be the steering column, and not an external solenoid. In fact, the solenoid's location is marked as being in the shifter tub.
I'll remain mute about the wisdom, design, or implementation success of this safety mandate.
