2nd that ---look for hose or valve leaks first.
heater core leaks are usually contained inside the housing and drain out underneath the car...using the drain that is there for also for AC condensation.
You will also get "smoke" coming out of the vents when you turn the heat on ...as the leaking coolant on the core surface gets vaporized buy the heat.
You will also get a slimmy film on the windshield when you use the defroster.
