B16 to B20 444-544

Hello,

As Cameron said, reuse the B16 motor mount brackets and we recommend using only 544 motor mounts.

Save your old motor mount big flat washers as the new motor mount kits come with thinner, smaller outer diameter flat washers.

And I am not thrilled with the split lock washers that comes with the new motor mount kits either. I think they should be thicker like the originals.

You WILL need a different transmission and possibly an new speedometer cable.

Although there are M40 transmissions that fit a B16 bellhousing, the transmission mounting bolt pattern is different than the B18/B20 bellhousing.

If you need to, most if not all of the guts of the M40 that fits a B16, can be transferred to an early B18/B20 M40/M41 case.

Be aware that the later M40 transmissions get a different rear bearing housing and the location of the speedometer drive output flange is moved to a different position.

When using the later M40 on a PV, this will force the speedometer cable to need to make a very sharp bend and this will shorten the life of the speedometer cable.

I believe a speedometer angle drive can be installed to remove the severe bending.

The way we address the radiator problem is to modify the stock radiator.

We have our local radiator shop remove the bottom tank, remove and plug the lower neck and drain petcock hole and then install a 1 1/4" outer diameter neck on the opposite side of the lower tank and then reverse the lower tank mounting.

We as our radiator shop to put the new location of the lower neck to be as far to the outer edge as it can possibly be mounted to the what will be the lower right hand side of the tank.

We also have the radiator shop remove the upper neck on the upper tank and it replaced with a 1 1/4" outer diameter neck as well and make the neck come out of the tank straight and not at an angle.

IIRC, we may have also had the upper neck moved a little to the passenger side to make the upper hose line up better with the thermostat housing on the B18/B20.

So you may want to install the engine and radiator before you have the radiator modified to see if the upper neck needs to moved to 1 side or the other.

You can then use an upper radiator hose from a 1969-1971 140 and 1969-1973 1800 and a shortened lower radiator hose from the same cars or the shorter version of the lower radiator hose from a 1967-1968 140, 122 or 1800(without oil cooler).

You will also have to do something about the voltage differences between the B16 and the B20.

The stock ignition, starter and charging systems for the B20 are 12 volt.

Since you have a 544, all of the 6 volt bits can be replaced with 12 volt parts from a B18 544 and most of the parts fit without modification in place of the 6 volt parts.

If you decide to replace all the 6 volt items, you will need a 12 volt fuel gauge(sending unit in gas tank does NOT need to be changed), wiper motor, heater fan motor, fan switch, horns and all new light bulbs.

I think you can reuse the 6 volt headlight switch on the dash, but you might want to get a 12 volt headlight switch anyway and the high beam switch does NOT have to be changed.

You will also need to change the ignition coil.

If you want to use the stock Volvo 12 volt coil with integral ignition switch, you will need to fabricate a simple adapter bracket as the coil mounting plates of the 6 volt coil has 3 holes and the 12 volt coil mounting plate has only 2 holes.
