I would start by checking the refrigerant levels (while the a/c is blowing cold). If that looks good I would guess the compressor or related relay (pretty sure there is a relay). You can look at the compressor, while the car is running and a/c on, and see when or if it starts run, then go from there.
I had a similar problem (resolved by adding freon) with my 1988 740 and a/c is frosty now after a vaccum for about an hour, replacement of a leakey shrader, and a refill of freon.
Others will certainly have advice too.
