Fuel gauge drops erratically (long) 700

745 turbo m46 576K A few weeks ago after driving in heavy rain the gauge began to drop at a rate that made me think a had a pretty severe fuel leak, pulled over and verified no leaks. Later checked the connection in the LR wheelwell and the ground. All good, never did it again?

Decided to replace the sending unit mainly due to the 450K on the AZ pre pump. Noted the new unit looked different, electrical connector, trunk grommet and tube for sending unit did not appear to be well attached. After rewiring I began the installation.I try to be very gentle and at that point I see the lower tube has separated.

While reassembling I may have distorted the metal contacts for the sender rods. Eventually corrected those. Clipped the tubes back together and checked the float for freedom of movement and resistance. All was good with a correct gauge reading.

Filled up and gauge went to full, pulled out on the road and the gauge began to drop! Shut it off then back on and it reads full, start to drive or just start moving and down it goes?

BTW this is an OE part and there was some damage to the shipping box. I have searched the FAQ,s but can't find a similar problem.

Thanks
Tom
