Pointy edge faces the fluid, so tapered side would got towards pad.

That way, then pressure is applied, the fluid tries to expand the seal against the inner bore.

Put it in the other way, the fluid would do the opposite, compressing the seal and the fluid would easily go past and escape, as it is wont to do.
