Sudden Rod Knock? 1993

John, hope things are well for you. You were right - a blown head gasket between cylinders can produce a loud engine knock noise that sounds like a bad rod bearing.

I finally got the head gasket replaced and everything back together. Success! There is no engine knock noise now (smooth as a sewing machine!).

Thanks for sharing your experience. Your comment gave me the confidence to go ahead and do the head gasket.

This was the first time I've changed a head gasket! Not too bad of a job. I learned a lot along the way (thanks to the BrickBoard). I had the head milled flat ($30) and replaced the valve seals myself. The valve clearances were not too bad so I didn't adjust them and I did not lap the valves.

Thanks to all who gave me advice on this problem.
