Drive Shaft Center Bearing replacement - where do I seat a bearing puller? 200 1988

I am looking to replace the Drive Shaft Center Bearing.

I inherited a bearing puller that has a point to press against the center of the drive shaft. But the information I see indicates that the rear portion of the drive shaft is splined into the front section leaving a 6"+(?) deep hole.

What does a bearing puller press against?
Is the tool I inherited missing a part?
Is there an accessory that will work with the puller to span the hole?

Is all this just lack of experience and any old piece of flat steel across the end will work?

Thanks
