broken bolt

This happened on an inline Ford 6 not one of my Volvos however the solution should be the same. When attempting to change the thermostat a bolt snapped off. I have a quarter inch showing with a 1/2 inch inside. It never moved before it snapped. Any ideas on getting it out?
