Things are different, but I do not know the details, when the powertrain itself is already certified. Example give, Ford CMAX hybrid and Ford fusion hybrid. Granted, they are in trouble for that now but you could also use the Dodge 1500 light duty diesel and the Dodge (Fiat) commercial vans. BMW 3-series 4-cylinder TDI and the X3 TDI.

That being said, I still think it unlikely it was done with full corporate knowledge.
