won't go fwd or reverse when in gear (m47 5-speed) 200 1991

Another in a series of problems my son has encountered in sub-zero temperatures since moving to MN . . .

This AM on the way to work he called to tell me that the car conked out on the I-94/394 part of daily his commute from StP to Minneapolis. He said the car "lost power" and he was able to coast off the exit. Engine continued to run, but doesn't take up drive regardless of gear selected (any of 5 fwd or reverse).

So I'm sitting here 1200 miles away (in VA) trying to figure out the problem. I guess it could be anything from a catastrophic failure of the transmission, to clutch diaphragm, to one of the u-joints, or the rear-end. Given the cold WX, I guess it could also be the rubber hockey-puck-like thing between the transmission output flange and the driveshaft. Any others?

Given the current temperatures (a balmy 4*F), he won't be the one working on the car--likely going to Foreign Service in Roseville--but I'm still trying to get some idea of what happened so I can manage Mom's (and my own) expectations. Depending on the diagnosis, I also may be looking for a source of used parts!

Thanks in advance!
