First off I'd check the rubber cap seals on top of the retainers and be sure they are all intact and not hard. Easy replacement by pulling the rocker arm assembly off.
I use the original guides over the bronze guides or sleeves. Those engines didn't smoke when new.
If the guides are replaced then the seats will have to be re-ground and the valves faced. A complete valve job in other words. Guides are simple for any machine shop to install. I've done lots of them.
