I drove the car over to a locksmith today and he was able to pick the lock on the gas cap in less than 5 minutes. It was indeed locked.

While I was there I had the locksmith re-key the glove compartment lock to match my doors / trunk, and cut a key for the gas cap. Didn't end up spending too much money all things considered.

I'll never figure out how the gas cap locked it self, but with a key going forward, this shouldn't happen again!
