85 240 p/s pump cavitates

ok, now, i'm stumped. working on an 84 240 with the 85-up p/s and ac compressor installed on a b23, not b230. first start, the pump cavitates like mad and jerky steering, especially to the left. it eventually settles down-no moaning, steers ok, etc. this takes about 30-40 minutes of driving. probably less if properly bled every time. unless it sits for a while, it's ok the rest of the day. overnight-same thing.

i've seen the suction side pull vacuum when running and trap air. this things seems to do it while off. both the pressure side and return hoses are DAMP, not leaky or drippy. hose clamps are tight. rack boots are empty-no leaks. it's like the vacuum fairies are pulling a fast one overnight and refilling the air.

it's been awhile since i've wrestled with these cars, with the bmws and mbs i work on also. i remember we replaced these pumps at the dealer for morning sickness-cold start, p/s moans. that's not what this is, unless it's the worst example ever. anyone seen this before? thanks, chuck.
