Do you have a *BIG* pair of channel locks? THat's how you check ball joints.
Jack the car up a bit, to take some weight off, put the channel locks around the bottom of the joint, below the ball, and on top of the nut. Squeeze. If you can compress the joint it all, it is worn and in need of replacement.
If there's no compression at all, and there is still grease in it, I'd look elsewhere for your clunk.
That said, as you and I know, losing ball joints sucks!
But I've never seen even cheap ones be bad at only 26k miles.
