I did not consider any reinforcement necessary as the towers were pristine (only ~65K miles), the damage you describe I've never seen in un-trashed cars, and I seem to drive slower and slower every year. ..More fatigue here than there.

And as I am trying to maintain "originality" as much as possible, I don't think I could handle all those little green dots.

Crossmember no longer out...
