Please help me diagnose a problem 444-544

Hello All,
My car is a '59 445. This is hard to describe but when I'm driving & I step on the brake pedal a noise or sound stops. When I lift my foot off the brake pedal the sound returns.
A mechanically-inclinded friend & I opened up the rear differential & everything looks ok in there i.e. there didn't seem to be any metal fragments, etc.
Some kind of bearing problem? other?
It's not that big of a problem, it's almost imperceptible, but, it would be nice to quiet the car down a bit.
All suggestiions appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Jim
