Crank sprocket on B23F: maybe it's on backwards?

Do the belt pulley grooves line up ? I don't think they would if it was on backwards. If it is backwards, give it a whack with a hammer and see if it pops off. If not, a simple puller should get it off.

Good for your kid trying to do some mechanical work for himself. We all learned by making mistakes.
