considering replacement for 960 S90-V90

My 1996 960 is nearing 300k and has served me well. I'm now considering a replacement vehicle. Definitely a wagon, not an SUV, not a sedan. I'm thinking about a Mercedes E350, BMW (though my mechanic advised me against anything newer than a 2003), Audi (though I'm biased against them; long story), and VW TDI (though that would be considerably smaller than my 960).

Maybe I should consider Volvo as well though a very good Volvo mechanic advised me against ~2001 / 02 / 03 V70 and I'm not interested in the SUV.

I'm limited by finances but think that a ~ 10 year old car with less than 100k would work. AWD would be nice though not if prone to problems on the model / year under consideration. Standard transmission preferred though not essential.

I know this is a learned group. Any comments or suggestions sincerely appreciated.
