Consider that with wider tires, it will make parallel parking more difficult (with the lack of power steering.)
The wider tires do help keep the car planted on the ground, especially if you are dealing with high winds.
The other factor is the spare tire: The space in the car is originally designed to accept only a 165 width tire. Anything wider won't fit.
I used 175 width tires for a while with out issue, though the 185s are more easily available these days. The last time I put tires on my 122 I used 185s.
