I think it's just the nature of the beast when it comes to 245 tailgate struts. Unlike some cars whose struts are "double acting" (my term) the 245 type will hold the hatch up - but offer no resistance in the halfway down-to closed position. Rather than you feeling like a jerk it's the borrower's responsibility to treat your (at least 22 year old) car with the respect it deserves. If they do not like to adhere to "special instructions" they always have the option to go rent a late model van.
Years ago in Car & Driver magazine (or maybe it was Road & Track) there was an article about what indicates a car has personality. One requirement--"special instructions"--the more it has--the more personality. My cousin regularly borrows my '80 245 M46 over the use of the S80, S60 and S40 available in his garage. By now he can recite the "special instructions" by heart. This particular 245 has LOTS of personality. -- Dave
