Steering Rack Vendor

After reading today's responses I am a little nervous about my decision, but here's what I discovered and what I did.

I think I got to eeuroparts.com by an casual on line search. The person I spoke to by telephone (Eric) seemed knowledgeable, cordial and diligent about checking that I was getting the right part. He came back with the following:

Rack $218
Core $110
Ship Free (discounted return, not sure of price but thought around $15.

With Jorgen highly recommended I called.

Rack 245
Core 125
Ship 35 (includes free return)

The difference was $70 less the return cost if purchased from eeuroparts.

Even if the discounted return from eeuroparts was $25 that is a $50 difference that, as do it yourselfer, I thought was significant. Of course if my eeuroparts rack leaks no amount will compensate for the disappointment and frustration.

There is more.

Jorgen advised of a 5 day shipping time frame, and that clock would not begin running unitl the next day because it was 3 p.m. and the rack would not ship out until the next day.

I spoke to eeuroparts at 4 and when he said the rack would "ship this evening" I thought this was just casual hype. My door bell rang the next day at 9 p.m. I wondered "who is ringing my door bell at this time of night". Never happens. I get to the door and I see a FedEx truck driving away. The rack is sitting at my door step. I am rather astonished. Free shipping.

I take the box down to my workroon and take the rack out. From what I can see it is the exact replacement. Its stamped in the steel "Volvo". It comes from Atlantic Auto.

Of course I won't know until I install it, which will be the ultimate test.

Also when talking to Eric, I mentioned that I might like to get a couple crush washers. I said I can recondition the ones that I'll take off the new rack but for the cost did he have any. Unfortunately he had only the Pressure hose washer in stock, but he said, "I'll throw a couple in for free" And he added. I can discount the rack for you a little. I will only be $6.00 so the rack will be $112. I said. OK. Every little bit is appreciated. The washers arrived in a separate box, but at the same time as the rack. 29 hour after order.

So far the experience has been quite remarkable.

I'm not planning to attempting the replacement until Sunday, when it is suppose to be in the 40s. But had I needed the rack right away, it couldn't have been any faster unless I had driven from Boston to Windsor, CT to pick it up.

Still, the enthusiasm for Jorgen seems to be without exception, so I would like to hear more.

What prompted me to call Jorgen was the post that questioned why I would waste money paying a "marked up" price.

I am confused.
