This is just an informational post to help people with similar issues. I'd had a check engine light for quite a while. I'd erase the codes and it would come back. For the longest time it was code 1-1-3. I finally had some time to investigate today, and when I checked the codes again I got 1-1-3, 2-2-1, and 2-3-1! I researched here and saw all kinds of posts for 1-1-3, with different solutions for different situations. The only symptom I had that something was amiss was a high idle - and the check engine light.
I took apart the air intake hoses and noted there was oil in the accordion hose. I had a new one in my parts bin and I installed that. First though, I cleaned the flame trap and breather box. There was no clogging, but some accumulation of oil deposits. I also cleaned the throttle body which was very dirty and the pin holes were clogged. Got it nice and shiny and unclogged. I checked the idle pressure valve while in there, and it wasn't that bad. But cleaned it for good measure. Put everything back together with the new accordion hose.
Started the car and it would rev high for about 30 seconds and stall out. It would start and stall. I should note here, that when I had cleared the codes in the past leading up to today, I would get the same symptoms until the computer would compensate with a high idle. I had read in other posts that code 1-1-3 had been caused by a bad AMM, but also read that that shouldn't be a cause for that code. What to do? I have 4 spare AMMs plus 2 known good ones in the other cars. Not wanting to take one out of the running cars, I took a chance with one of the spares. Installed it, and no change, same symptoms. Having a hunch here, I set the 2 "questionable" AMMs to the side and pulled a known good one from one of the running cars. Installed it, and sure enough it started right up and idled nice and smooth. No high revs, no stall. Went for a 10 minute drive and all was normal. No codes.
So in my case, code 1-1-3 (and subsequent codes 2-2-1, and 2-3-1) appear to have been the result of a bad AMM.
Took one of the remaining spare AMMs and installed it in the donor car and it started up and idled fine, no codes, so at least that spare is also known good now.
The other 2 bad AMMS will be disposed of. Or can they be fixed?
Hope this helps folks. 1-1-3 = bad AMM
