If it is a 740 give it a good snap with your finger - hold your forefinger with your thumb and release it under tension so that your fingernail strikes the gauge. If that works, the issue is in the gauge or dash.

Have you read the 700/900 FAQ? - some 240s have the same instruments.

We did this a couple of times a month for years with our "88 745 GL

You could remove the instrument panel and examine the connections change bad bulbs at the same time.
