Should the intank fuel pump on ' 87 Volvo 240 wagon run constantly?

I recently replaced both fuel pumps in my '87 240 wagon. Hope I don't have to do that again soon.
I'm sure the answer to my question is here somewhere, but I haven't found it, so please tell me if the in tank pump should run constantly ? Thanks, Larry
