Thermostat being duly discussed, my addition to the discussion is this:

The only part of the water pump and thermostat projects that are shared is draining the coolant. And for the t-stat, you only need to drain a little.

If your car is having cooling issues, sure. Go ahead and do 'em both. Or if the t-stat is known to be old. But know that the t-stat is a super duper easy project that can be done any time.
