In tank fuel pump...alternative aplication

Since the board seems a bit slow was wondering if my crazy idea might work.

Our non-Volvo race team burns through about 100-120 gallons of fuel in weekend when we run one car and as much as 200 if we run both. Currently we use a 32 gallon "gas buddy" to fill the race jugs and send someone out at least twice per weekend to fill it (track fuel is VERY expensive and normally a minimum 93 octane). The manual rotary pump on this recently started leaking and 32 gallons is just not going to cut it if we keep running two cars on a semi regular basis.

So I am looking at doing what a lot of other teams have done and upgrading to a 55 gallon drum with a 12 volt fuel pump. Since the in tank pump on the Volvo 2/7/9 series Bosch fuel injection is a known quantity to me I was considering mounting one to the spear and using it as our transfer pump but not sure it will work the way I want.

It has to lift just over 3' of head and pump a minimum of about 30 gallons per hour (preferably more). It will be submerged to within a 1/2" of the bottom of the drum and will use the stock fuel sock.

So, am I nuts?

FYI, the other alternative we have considered is finding a used auxiliary tank for my 1995 Chevy 3/4 ton but it appears the dual tank system offered from the factory had a slight "human error" issue in that no one thought about the effects of using a barely galvanized, mild steel tank in an application that MAYBE got emptied 1-2 times a year. All of them seem to have developed a case of returning to earth prematurely.
