So I tackled the problem of no power to the compressor.

After much inspiration from above and close scrutiny of the wiring diagram I figured out that at some point in the car's previous ownership someone had plugged the connector to the rear window defroster into the snowflake switch and the connector to the AC into the rear window defroster. When I bypassed the low pressure sensor at the accumulator, when the switch was activated, viola! the compressor clicked on!

Who knows how many years passed without a functioning AC (car came from Massachusetts) because it was never really necessary there.

So now I think I'm going to put another compressor on it, drier, orifice tube, and o-rings and get it going again!
