Diagnostic Error Codes 2-3-1 and 1-1-3 700 1989

Thanks for your suggestions Kittysgreyvolvo. Yesterday I finally got around to working on my Volvo..

I removed the Fresh air hose from the air filter box and found the baffle inside was in the position where it cut off the hot air coming from the exhaust manifold. I was not able to move the baffle but it appears as though outside air is getting into The air filter box. Removing the hose was not too difficult but putting it back on was a painful process = the bottom of the hose keeps folding in when I tried to put on the plastic tube of the air filter box. Finally got it in place.

I removed the cps vacuum hose from the air intake port and did not smell gasoline. I also started the car and found no gasoline was leaking from the disconnected hose.

According to the Volvo ’89 740 GL manual socket 6 is used to test the EGR but does not report any error codes. Control two using socket 2 tests the fuel system breakers which I plan to do in the near future. I did not see any test for the ignition

From what I could tell the grounds seem to be connected properly. With a multimeter I was able to check the continuity which was OK.

I will have to put the car on ramps and get under the car and check the exhaust system upstream from the catalytic converter.

So far I have not been able to get rid of the fault codes. I erase the codes and get a 1-1-1. Immediately on starting the car the fault indicator on the dashboard lights up and checking the diagnostic codes I get 2-3-1. 3-1-1 and 2-3-1 consistently.

Again thanks for your suggestions.
