99% chance it’s the odometer gear. IIRC the 93s had two variations of gear though I don’t remember the difference. On my three previous 240s the small gear was broken but on my current 1991 the small gear was broken and immediately after replacing it the large gear broke. I pulled one out of a junk cluster in my collection and used that and knock on wood it’s been behaving fine.
It happens to all 240s sooner or later, right now I’d wager most 240s still in existence have broken odometers. The odometergears fellow in Newport News or wherever he is is a good guy that we’ve probably all bought from. I think Dave Barton sells his gears too if you want to order anything from him and consolidate your order.
Also, be very careful when pulling out the cluster on the later 240s because the halogen illumination bulbs are really fragile and will fail if jarred, and they’re expensive. The Wagonmeister guy out in California (Dave Samuels?) sells a set at a decent price and he’s a good guy too. I think he posts on here occasionally.
One final point, if your car isn’t equipped with a tachometer make sure you don’t accidentally connect the red/white striped wire somewhere it doesn’t belong as that’ll burn stuff up.
Good luck!
