You did answer your own question! It is typically mounted under the Tach or Speedo securing thumbscrew (I don't recall which one, but wire length and location in the harness should make that fairly obvious).

Yes, it does need a good electrical connection to chassis which that provides (I guess), but a specific wire to chassis could never hurt.
