Electric fuel pump?

Bosch IS the Fuel Pump that Volvo used.

Do you have a Fuel Injected 1988 240? Or do you have a Carb --- your post does not mention that you have a Carburator. Most of the people on the BB -- in the USA, are only know that 1988 240s are fuel injected.

it's remarkable that Eric recalled that you have a Carb'd model.
