Hi Bruce S,
I normally use a little engine oil on the inner lips and outside seal body during installation. Then wipe off any excess. The seal itself was made to withstand engine oil so why not? So far so good mine won't leak even up to 8-10 years later till next belt change. I won't use any RTV sealant on the outside of seal, like you've said it would harden and make it difficult during next installation. Better than any RTV is using non-hardening sealant like Hylomar blue which could easily be wiped off during next time. Unless you need to install PTFE oil seals on more modern engine, these must go in without any oil on them.
