Perhaps you can find a garage that will test your emissions without doing an official inspection.

This would let you know if your cat is bad.

I bought a cat for one of our 740s quite reasonably at a parts jobber that sold foreign car parts to garages.

The original cat had fallen apart and rattled to beat the band!
