I replaced the rack on my '86 765wagon about a year ago. I got the new one from IPD. It wasn't to bad a job. The toughest part was removing the tie rod ends. If I remember correctly, I removed the tie rod ends, disconnected the hoses (tight fit for the wrench), loosened and slid the little universal joint out of the way, then unbolted and removed the rack. Re-aligned after replacing the rack.
I recommend you go ahead and put a magnet in your power steering fluid reservoir when you are done. I can't take credit for the idea. It came off this board.
