The 90 was notorious for intermittent and eventually failing rpm sensor. I think the bad ones had a yellowish band on them, the new ones are white.
I had the bad luck of simply having to have my car flatbedded to the shop to have it replaced, thank you and $125 later plus towing....thanks volvo dealers of america.
Eventually the car simply won't start rather than setting codes.
Replace the rpm sensor if it hasn't been replaced already...it's time. The part is about $40 list...you can probably get it less (but don't forget to add in shipping but then that's offset by no sales tax for out of state/mail order) from Borton Volvo or someplace else on the net.
