The fix was taking the cylinder with impacted key to the local dealer who is ordering a new key and cylinder from a vendor in CA. Price about $53.00.

Since I suspected the ignition switch of erratic operation, I also purchased a new Volvo part (about $50.00).Interestingly, the replacement key& cylinder only come with one key, additional copies cost $22.00, cut by dealer.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. This site is amazing. BTW, I got hooked on these cars 30 years ago when my girlfriend (now wife) purchased a "65 122S wagon for $600.00. Thanks again for all the advice.
