"Check Engine" Light Trouble Code Mystery 200 1991

Hi all you master electrical/emissions system problem solvers,

The "Check Engine" warning light came on so I took the '91 240 to my favorite local Volvo fix-it shop. It has automatic transmission, not that it makes any difference. The boys used their Snap-On scanner to test for codes. It retrieved code 241 which indicates and EGR malfunction. The EGR system was tested and seems to be functioning normally. The memory was erased and, so far, the code has not reset (check engine light has stayed off). Apparently, this 241 code is for California and '91 and newer 240 models. Any comments or suggestions as to what could have caused this?

SOME BACKGROUND: A couple of years ago, the check engine light kept coming on and the local guys couldn't figure it out. Took it to a Volvo dealer for diagnosis. At first the mechanic thought it was the electronic control unit and was all ready to replace it (ugh...big bucks); but, alas, after continuing to obtain sporadic, inconsistent voltage readings, he persisted and discovered two places under the hood with poor grounding to the chasis. He cleaned up the two connections and tightened things up and the light has stayed off until just recently. I checked the two places where he fixed the ground connections and they look good and feel tight.

Thanks,

Dan
