Man! Get a voltage reg with brushes (OE, bosch) for 20 bucks online. Cheaper aftermarket (german) for 13 bucks.

All you need is a short screw driver or a small vise grips. No soldering, takes 10 minutes to install. Yes, your brother got taken. On the 700, it's right on top.

I plan on replacing mine, just because it's so cheap. Extra security.
