Bad Radiator? 120-130 65

I have an original radiator in my 122. After driving more than 30mi (only on hot days) the water evaporates and the temp. get hot.If I don't pull over and replenish with coolant and water it begins to steam. The rubber on the cap is missing but other than that, how do I know if I need another one? I have another radiator from a 67 that has been "recored". What does that mean?
