It sounds like a ground problem, since it is intermittent and weird. All groudn problems do funny things, sometimes your signal lights come on when you press the horn, and you look like a dope when you beep at someone.

But as for your starting problem, is it just coincidence and the starter is bad maybe, or it has come loose?

If it is grinding it might not be aligning right because the solenoid isn't kicking it out enough, and sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't

What type of a bang was it that you heard? that is weird, wasn't a back fire bang or a gronch sound from the starter motor jamming?
