Jim -

You got two good answers to your Q. Summarized (I Hope): The OD allows the engine to run slower, but still produces the torque needed to keep up speed. At highway speeds, rolling and air resistance are about all that hold you back until you go uphill.

The max torque engine speed is not necessarily the max efficiency speed. Max horsepower speed is somewhere around 5400 rpm!
