Temperature keeps going up 200 1987

I have an '87 240DL and the temperature gage keeps going up to almost the red, and then back down again. It stays hot more than cool though. There is plenty of coolant and I just replaced the temperature gage (in the engine). Does anyone know what the problem may be? Thanks for your help!
