Turbo problems 700 1986

I am having problems with the boost on my 760 turbo. The turbo generates boost alright, but when the boost gets higher it suddenly cuts out. The car feels like it is lurching to a halt. Apparently the car has been doing this for a while. I'm hoping that it could be a loose hose or a wastegate adjustment. But I'm pretty new to this whole turbo thing and have not yet learned how to properly troubleshoot any problems. Thank you for your help.
