Best bet is to replace the compressor with a modern rotary compressor if you are not concerned with keeping hte car 100% stock. Bob Foltz from the Volvo Sports America club (e-mail is bobfv1800@aol.com I believe) makes a custom bracket for the Sankyo/Sanden SD507/SD508 compressors. I believe this compressor is compatible with R134A refrigerant if you want to change over, but Freon (R12) is still available and is more efficient. You may also need new hoses to attach to the new compressor if you swap to a rotary compressor. All this can be done by a competent A/C shop. I did the swap on my 73 1800ES, and my dad did as well. The rotary compressor is a lot quieter. My car cools really well now, especially with tinted windows.
Let me know if you need further details. Bon Foltz probably can also supply you with additional info.
