Over heating 200 1990

My '90 240 with no warning will send the temperature gauge into the red zone... no gradual raising... just straight to the red... I have had the thermostat replaced, the water pump replaced, and the radiator flushed, all to no avail.. once the temp shoots up I can make it go down by turning on the heater and diverting some heat (not enjoyable in July in Atlanta)... It usually occurs when I am not moving/idling... any clues? thx
